Bilbao has undergone an exemplary transformation from a traditional industrial city an internationally known destination for cultural and city tourism. A large portion of the gained awareness is due to the Guggenheim Museum and the new metro line with stations according to designs by Sir Norman Foster. However, also more traditional attractions, such as the Mercado de la Ribera (Market Square La Plaza), the Museum of Fine Arts (Museo de Bellas Artes) or the Old Town (Casco Viejo) can be found in Bilbao. The proximity to the wine region of La Rioja and the unique offer of pintxos (skewers) have made Bilbao a culinary destination. In the metropolitan area of Bilbao, the Hanging Bridge (Puente Colgante) over the Bilbao estuary as a world heritage site attracts many visitors every year.
